Broadband Router with Integrated ATA

An ATA (short for "analogue terminal adapter") is a device that can connect to a VoIP telephone service over an Internet connection and then present that service to a traditional fixed line phone on a specific port. This is sometimes referred to as an FXS port.
Once you configure the ATA for the VoIP service, you can then plug in a traditional fixed line handset to the FXS port on the ATA and when you pick up the handset, you will get a dial tone and can ring numbers as usual.
ATA's can be standalone devices, or they can be integrated into your broadband router. When they are integrated into a router, then the FXS port is actually on the back of the router itself.
